Stella Povich Obituary

Leesburg, Fl

Stella Povich passed peacefully July 22, 2019 after suffering an acute stroke.

Born June 9,1928 in the little town of Dunellen NJ, to Stanley and Salomea Pogorzelski.  She was the youngest of 5 sisters and 1 brother.  She was raised in the Bronx where she studied hairdressing.  Stella was extremely proud of her Polish heritage.  In 2004, she was thrilled to accompany her daughter Carol, sister Josie and nieces on a tour of Poland.

Stella married the love of her life Joseph Povich 11/ 27/1948. Their enduring marriage was one of great love, joy, laughter and respect.  She was his princess and he truly was her prince.  They moved to Manville with Joe’s family.  It was Stella’s desire to return to her “little town of Dunellen” - 1952 they bought their first home. Their home was the heart of family gatherings, where she doted on her nieces and nephews, longing for children of her own.  With the help of Dunellen’s OB specialist, Dr. Spritzer she gave birth to two daughters.  Stella filled their home with love, laughter and dancing polkas.  She raised their girls with good values, Polish traditions, teaching them to cook, sew, and the love of dance (especially the Polkas).   Stella was very creative and made everything from decorations, children’s clothes to curtains. She won many contests for her many talents.  In 1963 she took 1st place for the beautiful costumes she sewed for herself and daughters for Dunellen’s 100 yr. celebration.  Stella enjoyed dressing-to-the nines to attend VFW dances with her husband.  Yearly vacations were spent in Wildwood for the VFW conventions – where she was famous for her Pina-coladas. She started the Nobodies Club for the wives.  Stella enjoyed having a good time, kidding around and would often break into a song. They both loved traveling and retired to Florida.  She read the paper daily, enjoyed old movies and learning something new every day, as well as a good hamburger and a Bailey’s.  Stella loved her precious rescue dog Daisy who shared her birthday June 9 (6/9/98 -1/31/17).

Stella retired from Raritan Valley Hospital as an Anesthesiologist Assistant. She was also a life member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, VFW Junior Girls Leader, K of C Columbiettes and Girl Scout Leader.

Stella lost her Jozef on February 18, 1996 - leaving a broken heart that never quite healed.   On September 14, 2005, Stella’s heart broke again when her eldest daughter Cynthia passed unexpectedly from a hemorrhagic stroke.  Stasha is predeceased by siblings Chester, Mary, Helen and Josie.   She is survived by her devoted daughter Carol, and grand dog Lily, sister Lillian and nieces and nephews she adored.
