Selma Spang (nee Skolnick), 89, of Piscataway, entered peacefully into eternal rest on Friday, December 29, 2023 surrounded by the love and prayers of her family and friends.
Selma, born in Newark, was a lifelong New Jersey resident and lived in Springfield until moving to Piscataway over fifty-five years ago. Selma completed high school in Millburn before attending secretarial school, and subsequently worked as a medical secretary at City Hospital in Newark. She then worked at Keys Martin Advertising Agency in Springfield after marrying the love of her life, Joseph, whom she first saw across the room at a New Year’s Eve party in 1953. Believing that being a mother was “the best job in the world” she then focused on raising her four children until her youngest went to kindergarten, at which point she followed as a school aid and classroom assistant. She later worked as a teacher and teachers' aid at Start-Rite Nursery School in Piscataway.
Selma was a long-time volunteer in scouting, including Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, and served as den mother for many years. An awesome cook and baker, she customized meals and treats on special occasions by making everyone’s favorites. Her motherly love extended to the family’s pets, Major and Patches, over many years as well.
Selma is survived by her children Kathleen, Robert (wife Nichole), David (wife Christina), Richard (wife Jackie), her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, two nephews as well as many extended relatives and loving and close life-long friends. Selma is predeceased by her husband Joseph, her sister Sheila, brother-in-law Bernhard, sister-in-law Patricia, and niece Patricia. Friends and loved ones are invited to visit with the family between 2:00pm-4:00pm and between 7:00pm-9:00pm on Sunday, January 7th at the Sheenan Funeral Home, 233 Dunellen Ave, Dunellen, NJ 08812.
Interment will follow a Catholic Mass of Burial at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 501 New Market Road, Piscataway, NJ 08854 at10:30am on Monday, January 8th .
