Rose Marie Murray Obituary

Rose Marie (Smith) Murray passed away July 21, 2021 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Suches, GA, surrounded by her family.

Rose was born to James Andrew and Mary Elizabeth (Hardy) Smith on January 18, 1938, at home, in their apartment above the Stelton (now Edison) Road Railroad Train Station. Their family moved to Sanford Street, New Brunswick, NJ where Mom attended Sacred Heart School.

Rose married Joseph Anthony Murray, Sr. on April 26, 1958 and lived in New Jersey for several years as well as Tucson, AZ, before returning to Dunellen, NJ and then residing in Jasper, GA.   Rose was a nurse's aide at Green Brook Manor Nursing Home in NJ and she continued using her skills at Pickens General Hospital and Grandview Nursing Home in Jasper, GA; as well as being a private duty nurse.

For those of us who knew Rose, she was strong-willed and a woman of great faith.  Rose was a Confirmation teacher at Our Lady of Fatima in Piscataway and continued as a First Holy Communion teacher at Our Lady of the Mountains where she and her late husband, Joe were founding members.  She also enjoyed puzzles, crosswords, games and was involved in community theatre with the Tater Patch Players.

Once the grandchildren arrived, Rose spent most of her time enjoying their company, as well as, making frequent trips to NJ to visit her son and daughter-in-law as well as both extended families. Rose enjoyed trips to the Jersey shore, researching genealogy and spending time with her family.  She was excited to learn that the family legend of her great-grandfather; Daniel Pyatt Hardy really was true - he was a POW at Andersonville during the Civil War, survived, made his way back to New Brunswick, NJ where he ran a print shop until his death in 1909.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph (2010), her parents; James and Mary and sisters; Ann Armstrong (Earl & Frank Shannon), Irene Suydam (William), Joyce Zigler (Raymond), Lucille Harris (Harold); and Mary Elizabeth, brothers; James Nicholas (Patricia & Jaqueline) and James Andrew Jr.; sisters and brothers-in-law; Hugh D. Murray, II, Eleanor Hugenbruch (William), James (Myra), Robert, Sr. (Mary), Terese King (Warren), Francis Sr. (Beatrice & Lucy), as well as Chester Makowski (Helen) and Frank Bell (Ruth).

Rose is survived by her children; Joseph, Jr. (Joan) of Raritan, NJ, Michelle Cruce (Tony) of Suches, GA, Jayne Murray of Ellijay, GA, Nadine Harrison of Jasper, GA and Amy Schmalen (Andy, Sr.) of Dahlonega, GA as well as Grandchildren; Jacob, Alicia Chumley (Joe). Matthew (Lindsey), Jamison (Elise), Emily, Nicholas, Patrick, Mary Elliot (David), Andrew, John Paul, Killian, Teresa, Catherine, Stephen, and Andy Jr., and two new additions – her great-grandchildren; Cameran Elizabeth Chumley and Sutton Grace Bailey.

Rose is further survived by three sisters: Ruth Bell, Milltown, NJ; Helen Makowski, Spotswood, NJ and Judith Pastore (Joe), North Brunswick, NJ as well as sister-in-law; Mary Murray (Hugh D.) Phillipsburg, NJ; brothers-in-law; Donald Murray (Ruth) Watchung, NJ and Eugene Murray, Spring Lake, NJ along with many dear nieces and nephews and extended family.
