Robert H. Sonner (86) of Piscataway, NJ passed away on November 4, 2023.
Bob was born on November 23, 1936 and was raised in North Arlington, NJ. He graduated from Queen of Peace High School and later Fairleigh Dickinson University with a BS in Chemistry and an MBA. He married Barbara Ann Brogan on August 20, 1960 in Nutley, NJ, and then raised three children in Piscataway. His career as a chemist and analytical instrumentation designer took him all over the world. The Instrument Society of America recognized his contributions with the Gilmer-Tomason-Fowler Award in 1984 and the Excellence in Documentation Award in 1985.
Ever the scientist, Bob loved both to tinker with the smallest minutiae of machinery in his home and to study all that looms larger than life, from distant galaxies to sweeping symphonies. He loved the sea, the stars, and — most mysterious of all — the nuances of the U.S.economy. He was also known to savor every last sip of wine and bite of food, especially Barbara’s chicken paprikash.
Bob is preceded in death by parents Harold and Irene and brother Kenny. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; his children, Lynn (Ed) Weber, Bob (Jill) Sonner, and Ken (Tracy) Sonner; his grandchildren, Jessica, Ryan, Randal, Justin, Bryan, Hope, Matt, and Katie; great-grandson Callum; and many other friends, colleagues, and mentees.
A Catholic Mass will be held on Saturday, November 11 at 10:30 AM at Our Lady of Fatima Church (501 New Market Rd, Piscataway, NJ). A memorial service will follow from 12 to 2 PM at Sheenan’s Funeral Home (233 Dunellen Ave, Dunellen, NJ).
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate any memorial gifts be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or another charity close to your heart.
