Orvaletta Hoffman

Orvaletta “Orvie” Adeline Hoffman, age 90, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2025, at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Born on July 13, 1934, in Emporium, Pennsylvania, Orvie was the daughter of Albert A. and Mae (Werts) Thonie. She grew up in Succasunna, New Jersey, and graduated from Roxbury High School in 1953. She spent many years working at Warner Chilcott/Lambert in Morris Plains, NJ, before retiring. Orvie lived for many years in Greenbrook, NJ, before recently relocating to Matthews, NC.
She is survived by her beloved companion, John “Jack” Willard; three nephews, Thomas and Donald Cherry, and David Thonie; and three nieces, Linda Taetzsch, Kathryn Carpenter, and Kimberly Thonie. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter C. Hoffman; her parents; three brothers, William, Grover, and Ralph Thonie; and her sister, Jane Cherry Egan. Orvie was a devoted member of Wesley United Methodist Church in South Plainfield, NJ. She had a passion for collecting matchbook covers and was a proud member of the Garden State Match Cover Club. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star of New Jersey, Starlight Chapter #107. An avid reader throughout her life, Orvie will be remembered for her warmth, curiosity, and strong sense of community. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her graveside service on Saturday, May 24, 2025 at Lake Nelson Memorial Park, 150 Morris Avenue, Piscataway at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, Wesley United Methodist Church, or your preferred cause.
