Mary Louise Apgar Obituary

Mary (Wisniewski) Apgar

Middlesex Borough

Mary Louise Apgar, 95 passed away peacefully to her eternal life on Friday, August 26, 2022 at JFK Medical Center in Edison, NJ with her two children by her side.

Born in her parent’s home by a midwife in Central City, Pennsylvania – a coal miner’s daughter to the late Anthony and Mary (Giaza) Cznareski Wisniewski of Krakow, Poland.

When Mary was 10 years old, she moved to Manhattan, NY to be with her two sisters and two cousins.

In 1939, she visited the NY Queens Worlds Fair and was on the Manhattan parade route as a New York teenager, seeking a glimpse of England’s King and Queen as they were in route to visit the Roosevelts of Hyde Park. In the same year she also saw the invasion of her parent’s homeland of Poland by the Germans that began WWII in Europe.

Mary still has family living in Poland with cousins who are currently housing Ukrainian refugees from the seven-month Russian war.

In 1942 Mary, along with her sisters Veronica and Rose moved to Front Street in Plainfield where in 1946 she met and then married WWII Air Force Sergeant George Apgar on October 22, 1949.

In 1954, Mary along with her husband and son, Georgie moved to Runyon Avenue in Middlesex. Mary worked endlessly as a wife, mother, sister, aunt and neighbor.

She enjoyed both visiting her family in Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Connecticut and South Jersey – as well as summer vacations down the Jersey Shore.

In 1997 she visited Poland, Hungary and Austria with family members and friends of the Plainfield Polish Church on 8th Street.

For many years Mary attended her husband Apgar Philhower Family Reunions and served as an Apgar Family Trustee in 1988 through 1997.

She is survived by her devoted children – son George Apgar, Jr. of North Brunswick and daughter, Debra Apgar of Middlesex, along with many cherished nieces, nephews and neighbors of Runyon Avenue.

Mary is predeceased by her Polish immigrant parents, her husband George Apgar, Sr., her two sisters, Veronica Bethlejewski and Rose Kukish, cousins Frank Patrick, Mary Hershberger, Josephine Belovitz and Ann Patrick – all born in Central City, Pennsylvania.

Nothing mattered more to Mary then her faith and family and she will be forever missed.

Mary will be remembered for her incredible love and care for her family and friends.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 10:00am at Wesley United Methodist Church in Plainfield. She will then be interred in her family’s plot at Hunterdon County Fairmount Cemetery.
