Mary Ann (Sabol) Portik, age 78, beloved mother and grandmother and daughter of George and Eleanor Sabol, passed peacefully into eternal rest on Saturday October 30th.  She was born on January 7, 1943 in Plainfield NJ.  She is a graduate of Plainfield High School and Berkeley College before starting her Secretarial career in Manhattan at Chubb.  She continued her career at both Rutgers School of Engineering and the Rutgers English department.  She met and fell in love with Frank Portik and they married on September 2, 1967 and they moved to Dunellen in 1970 and have been residents of Mountain View Terrace for 51 years. 

            She was an avid piano player and enjoyed listening to classical music and had a lifelong love of reading.  One of her favorite topics to read about and discuss was the Civil War.  Mary Ann and Frank loved to travel, go out on their boat on the Raritan Bay, and enjoyed time at their beach house in Normandy Beach with friends and family.  Mary Ann was a member of the Dunellen High School Booster Club, Dunellen Democratic Organization, Dunellen PTO, and the Dunellen Band Parents Association.  Mary Ann was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Dunellen for over 40 years.  Mary Ann enjoyed going to all her son’s sporting events, school concerts, and school plays both high school and college. And in 1989, Mary Ann and Frank became the first franchisees of Manhattan Bagel and later changed the name to Dunellen Bagel that has been a local establishment now for over 30 years.

            Mary Ann was predeceased by her sister Dorothy, her husband Frank in 2003, and her son Douglas in 2020.  She is survived by her brother Robert Sabol and his wife Betsy of Portland, OR.  Her brother George Sabol and his wife Mimi of Yardley, PA.  Her son Jeffrey Portik and his wife Meghan of Dunellen, NJ. Her Daughter-In-Law Dina Portik of Dunellen, NJ.  Her grandchildren Tristan, Jackson, and Madeline.  Her Nieces Nancy Bechtol and her husband Kerry of Portland, OR.  Stacy Sabol and her wife Sonja of Montara, CA.  Her nephews Steve Sabol and his wife Allison of Perkasie, PA.  Dave Sabol and his wife Laura of Furlong, PA. and Rick Sabol and his wife Meghan of Doylestown,PA along with many great nieces and nephews, cousins, and great friends. 

Friends may visit the family on Thursday, November 4 from 4:00-7:00pm at the Sheenan Funeral Home, 233 Dunellen Avenue in Dunellen. A funeral service will be held at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church on Friday, November 5 at10:00am with burial to follow at New Cemetery in Somerville.  

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dunellen High School Athletic Department.  Checks can be made to the Dunellen Board of Education and mailed to 400 High Street, Dunellen NJ 08812.
