Mary Cortese, beloved mother, grandmother (Mimi), sister, aunt and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on May 5th 2025 in Rhode Island. She was born on June 25th, 1935, in Plainfield, NJ, to Anna (Brown) and Norman Tramontano.
Mary grew up and attended school in Plainfield, NJ. She then spent the majority of her life in Middlesex, NJ. There she happily raised her family and helped her husband Michael run the family business. Mary was a devoted mother, proud homemaker and the very heart and soul of the family. As a loving grandmother she also helped raise her grandchildren nurturing them with patience, love, and devotion. Her generous spirit, kindness, and caring nature touched everyone she encountered. Her playful wit and sarcastic humor could lift the spirits of those around her, turning frowns into smiles.
Mary had a passion for travel, often embarking on adventure with her husband as well as their wide circle of friends from the Traveling Seniors group. Mary was a bingo enthusiast, often managing multiple boards with ease. Mary along with her husband Mike loved hosting family gatherings, dancing to their favorite tunes, visiting Atlantic City, and playing cards. They even were on a bowling league together. If you knew Mary, you knew she was a Connoisseur of Shirley Temple, collecting memorabilia that not only filled her home but her heart.
For the last several years of her life, Mary resided in her new home at Atria Bay Spring Village, Rhode Island. There, she formed many friendships and a became a beloved member of their community. Mary was known by all for her kind heart, winning personality, considerable charm and easy-going spirit. She enjoyed scenic bus rides, and lively games of bocce and bingo. Her most notable signature playful response when asked if she needed anything was, “Yes, fives and tens,” often accompanied by her witty warm smile.
Mary had a unique way of expressing love to those in her life. As she often said, concluding every phone call with a sweet reminder, “Always remember somebody loves you.” Mary Cortese will be deeply missed and forever remembered for the love and joy she brought into the lives of all who knew her.
Mary is predeceased by her brother Norman Tramontano and devoted husband, Michael Cortese, with whom she shared 63 wonderful years of marriage.
She is survived by her dear sister, Ann Destefanis of West Palm Beach FL. Her two loving daughters, Shelley Cortese and her wife, Maria Tarantino Cortese of Barrington RI, and Janice Belcoure and her husband Michael Belcoure of Middlesex, NJ. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who all filled her life with joy.
A private graveside service will be held at Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains.
