Maria Rea

March 12, 1921 ~ June 14, 2022 (age 101)

Maria Rea, 101 years, passed into our Lord’s hands peacefully in her sleep on June 14, 2022 at Bridgeway Rehab & Care Center.  Maria led a very full and wonderful life until most recently when she entered the hospital with a fractured toe, that escalated into renal failure.
Maria lived in Dunellen for 72 years in the same home that was her heartland.  In her younger years, she was a salesperson for Parents Magazine and was always on the top of the leaderboard in sales.  She also worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance company where she was one of the youngest agents in the company.  She always loved people and always was successful.
Maria was an avid gardener to the max. She would plant hundreds of flowers  and vegetable plants yearly, and  care for them daily. If she knew someone who was starting a garden, she would be sure to give them the best seeds or plants, and instruct them in detail what to do. She loved her home in Dunellen.  She never tired of working around her home.  In later years, she operated and owned “Maria’s Produce” which was a stand on the homestead property in South Plainfield.
Maria thrived on friendships and people.  She was a friend to all.  She had three (3) favored grandsons, John and wife Kristen, Tommy, and Eddie and wife Alison.  She loved spending time with all of them, and, always had funny stories to share about when she cared for them. She was pretty strong to endure the antics they put her through! They loved it! They were a challenge that she always met!
Maria is survived by one cherished daughter, Norma and exceptionally wonderful son in law, John.  She is also survived by her nine cherished great grandkids…Dylan, Kylie, Matthew, Samantha, Brooke, Brandon, Chase, Ryan and Coley. She was very close to all of them. She was always quick to give her advice to them. They always came over to see her, brought flowers and were always so sweet.  She looked forward to their visits. Maria also is survived by her nieces and nephew, Donna Grimes, Karen Gumina ,Andrea Pesta and Joseph Rea. She also is survived by close friend Ann Doeffinger (she called her second daughter), close friends Judy Schenkel and Kathy Wagel  and Donna Bateman whom she was very close to, and very special “old” family friend Joe Horner. Maria will be missed by all.
Maria is also survived by her brother Joe and his lovely wife Lucille, who Maria considered as a sister. Maria and Joe would talk for hours..He always said her birth certificate was wrong!   Maria was predeceased by her siblings, Nicky, Carmen, Emilio, Louise, and Norman, her sister in law Ann who she loved dearly. Her parents Louis and Andriana Rea and many close friends. She is also survived by two cousins, Katherine Gangemi and Tina Chiccarelli.
Viewing will be held on Monday June 20th at Sheenan  Funeral Home in Dunellen from 4-8 pm. Final viewing on Tuesday June 21 at 9 am and Mass at St. Johns Evangelist Church at 10 am.  Burial will be at St. Bernards Cemetary on Rte. 28 in Bridgewater immediately following.
Maria made many charitable donations, but her favorite was St. Judes Childrens Hospital.
