Lester D Doll, Jr

On July 14, 2023, Lester Dickson Doll, Les, aged 81, passed away at his lifelong home in Dunellen, NJ, surrounded by his loving family. Born on January 25, 1942 in Jersey City, NJ, to Lester D. Doll Sr. and Theodora M. Doll (neé Kopf), Les graduated from Henry Snyder High School in 1961. After a career working for the Port Authority of NY and NJ, he retired as Operations Examiner and later took a position with Dunellen Department of Public Works (Dunellen DPW). He was a esteemed life member of the Dunellen Defender Fire Company #1.

Being a family man was one of Les’ proudest accomplishments. Raising his children and grandchildren, he was a passionate supporter of their interests whether it be sport or creative. He was known to document both day-to-day and milestones on the camcorder offering priceless entertaining commentary and narration. He loved the outdoors and swimming–especially being surrounded with friends and family. Also known to many outside of his family as “Poppop”, he had the ability to light up any room and make everyone feel a part of the family. He was a generous, loving, compassionate, lighthearted, and witty person. A humble handyman, he always had an enthusiasm for mechanics, loved classic cars and old classic country music. When not riding his motorcycle with his wife through the state and beyond, you could have found him relaxing on his front porch enjoying conversations by phone and in person, listening to the greatest country hits, or hanging with his faithful four-legged companion Sadie. He was an exceptional husband, father, grandparent, and friend who will be missed dearly by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ruth C. Doll (née Batog), children Lester E. Doll (Paula), Deborah J. Appleton (Paul), and David M. Doll (Dawn), brother Kenneth C. Doll (Rosemary), nephew and niece Kenneth Doll II (Tracy) and Allison Thiriez (Stéphane), grandchildren Erica McGee (Brandon), Paige, Shelby, Rachel, Zachary, Paul (Macie), Claudia, Kelsey, Taylor, Brianna, Kayla, Bruce, Christie, Davidson, and great grandchildren Jackson, Eden and Colton. He is predeceased by his beloved sons Joseph M. Doll and Brian K. Doll, loving Mother, and Father.

Family and friends may pay their respects at the Sheenan Funeral Home Thursday, July 20, 2-4 pm, or 6-8pm. A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 21, 10am at the Sheenan Funeral Home. Lester will be interred at Lake Nelson Memorial Park, Piscataway NJ. Donations in memory of Lester can be made to Dunellen Defender Fire Company #1.
