Kathryn S (Stengle) Kelly

Kathryn S. Kelly, 87, of Dunellen passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at RWJUH in Somerville with her loving family by her side.   Born in the Bronx, NY, she was the daughter of the late George and Catherine (Powell) Stengle.

Kathryn graduated from Marymount Manhattan College in 1953 with a B.A. in Art Education.   In 1987 she earned an M.A. in Humanities from California State University, Dominguez Hills.  She was wed in 1955 at Saint Helena's Church in the Bronx.  Prior to her marriage, she taught art in the schools of the New York Archdiocese.  After her children grew she returned to teaching as the Art teacher at Immaculata High School in Somerville, NJ from 1977-1984.  She loved times at the beach and travels to Ireland and Italy.  She was a dedicated watercolorist, pastel and fiber artist.   After retiring from teaching she opened a home studio, The Celtic Needle, and garnered acclaim for her Celtic knotwork embroidery of liturgical vestments.

Besides her parents, Kathryn was predeceased by her beloved husband, William L. Kelly of Springfield, MA.  She is survived by her sister, Carol Markey (Edward), of Beachwood, OH, and her children, George J. Kelly (Susan) of Mt. Airy, MD, Joseph W. Kelly (Kate) of Riverdale, MD, Jane M.  Landy (Michael) of Dunellen, NJ, Paul M. Kelly (Sherrie) of Blenheim, NY and Susan M. Kelly of Dunellen, NJ, 12 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and 21 nieces and nephews.

Friends may visit the family on Friday, February 22 from 4:00-8:00pm at the Sheenan Funeral Home, 233 Dunellen Ave in Dunellen. A mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 23 at 10:00am at St. John's Catholic Church in Dunellen. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover.
