John Noonan Obituary

John Henry Noonan passed peacefully at home in Piscataway on December 7th, 2020 following a short battle with dementia, at the age of 73. He was born on December 12, 1946 in Plainfield, NJ as the third child to the late Vincent and Elizabeth Noonan. He grew up and attended school in Westfield, NJ. He went on to graduate from Providence College in 1968 with a degree in Economics.

After graduating college, he went to work for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. He held many positions within the agency in their New York district office and headquarters in Washington D.C. In the late 1970’s, John was named the district’s head of all safety and soundness examinations and follow-up supervisory activities. In 1992, he was made responsible for the development of all OCC supervisory policy and bank regulations. He went on to become Examiner-in-charge for Chase Manhattan Bank in 1996. He worked for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency until 2003, when he retired after 35 years. He began working for Valley National Bank as a Chief Risk officer beginning in 2003 and continued until his retirement in 2015.

While living in Washington D,C., he met the love of his life, Maura Clancey. Together they traveled the world from the beaches of Hawaii, to Australia, enjoying the beauty of the countries and each other’s company. They returned back to New Jersey where they were married on June 10, 1989 in Westfield. John and Maura raised two children together, in Dunellen. They spent many family trips together from Alaska to days at the beach.

After his wife’s death in 2010, John became an active parishioner with Our Lady of Fatima parish. He assisted with daily mass as a lector or altar server. He served as a home bound minister for several years and as a member of the choir. He loved giving back to others in the community and making people smile. John always took a moment out of his day to stop and talk to families and remind them to enjoy every minute with their children because they grow up in the blink of an eye and to take lots of pictures. John understood how important it was not to take life for granted and embrace every moment you have with your loved ones.

John is predeceased by his loving wife Maura and his brother Bob (2018). He is survived by both his sons; Greg and Alex Noonan and a granddaughter Amelia Noonan. He is also survived by his two brothers, Jerry Noonan (Pat), Willian Noonan (Candy), sister-in-law Debbie Noonan, nephews Matthew Noonan (Carol), Michael Noonan, Kristofer Noonan (Sara), Paul Noonan (Erinn Loren), and niece Keriann Noonan Roman (Raphael). He is survived by numerous grand-nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give thanks for the love and care given to John during this difficult journey with dementia by his special friend Ashley Overeem. Her devotion to John’s care will always be remembered. The family would also like to thank his care manager, Kathy Bassiacos for all her time, dedication and advocacy over the past year.
