Irene Potynski, 93, of Piscataway, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 18, at St. Peter’s Hospital in New Brunswick. Born in Manville, she was the daughter of the late Anna and Metro Bukovecky.
Irene, employed by RCA in Bridgewater and Chanel in Piscataway was a member of the greatest generation, and the hardships that she endured as a member of that generation shaped her to become the hardworking and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother that she was. She was a longtime member of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church in Dunellen and cherished her parish family. In her youth, Irene was a force on the roller derby rink, and through her life enjoyed traveling, playing bingo and going to casinos. She also loved to cook and bake for her family. Her trips to the hair and nail salon were regular treats she enjoyed giving herself. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband Stefan Potynski in 1984, as well as by her siblings Vilma Sator, Anna Sator, Mary Demko, Margaret Zujkowski and her brothers Mike, John and Victor Bukovecky. Irene is survived by her sisters Betty Hydro and Louise Esposito, and her children, daughter Janet and husband Peter Emanuel of Sarasota, FL, daughter Diane and husband Kenneth Johnsen of Piscataway, and son Steven Potynski and wife Joyce of Quakertown, PA. She is also survived by her 5 grandchildren, Stefanie Kreilein and husband Matthew, Matthew Johnsen and wife Sarah, and Michael, Jordan and Jonathan Potynski as well as by her 2 great-grandchildren Elsie and Theodore Kreilein.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 25 at 10:00am at St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church in Hillsborough. Entombment will follow at Lake Nelson Mausoleum in Piscataway. Please note: Due to COVID concerns, there will be no services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Irene's name to St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church in Dunellen.
