George A Nagel, Jr., of Dunellen, N.J., passed away peacefully from natural causes on February 11, 2022 surrounded by family. He was 95 years old.
George was born in Dunellen, N.J. to George A. Nagel, Sr. and Bethia Murray on July 22, 1926, the oldest of 6 sons. He attended St. John’s School in Dunellen, N.J., and graduated from St. Peter’s High School in New Brunswick, N.J.
After graduation, George enlisted in the US Naval Corp and after serving his country he married Barbara Haas on June 2, 1951. In June of last year they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. After serving in the Navy, George worked at Art Color Printing Company in Dunellen then went on to start his own printing company in South Plainfield before he began to enjoy his retirement.
He was a Charter/Founding member of the Dunellen Athletic Club and played for many years in the men’s softball league. George was a very accomplished bowler who bowled in a league well into his 80s and was very proud of his top score of 290. He loved the game of golf and celebrated his 89th birthday with a birdie! When not participating himself, George was a dedicated fan of the UConn Women's basketball team, the Mets, the Jets and all of his children and grandchildren's sports, dance and other activities. He also loved being at the beach in the summer with his family, serving as head pro and digging holes in the sand for a game of "beach golf". George was also meticulous in everything he did, personally fixing everything around the house and making sure it was done the "right" way.
He was a devout Catholic and member of Saint Luke’s Church in South Plainfield, and belonged to the Knights of Columbus.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers, Peter, Harry, Arthur, and Robert Nagel.
George is survived by his wife Barbara and his children Judy Hoffman Schultheis (David), Patricia DelRiego (Lou), Thomas Nagel (Lisa), Barbara Goldsmith (Richard), and Susan Pike (Douglas). He is also survived by his younger brother Howard, of Dunellen, 13 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren and Ana Z his special caregiver and friend.
Visitation will be from 9-11 AM on Tuesday, February 15, at Sheenan Funeral Home. A Catholic Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 AM at St. John’s Church in Dunellen. The family has requested that in this time of Covid that attendees respect social distancing, wear masks at the celebrations and stay home if you are not well.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in George's name to ABILIS Inc. www.abilis.us, an organization that supports children and adults with special needs.
