Ellen Jane Mackie, 80, died peacefully on September 25th, 2023. Born on February 28th, 1943 to the late Neil and Anna (Burns) Mackie, Ellen spent her early years in Dunellen before moving to South Carolina and Louisiana, and settling back in Dunellen in 2008.
Ellen was a brilliant woman who not only loved to learn, but also loved sharing her knowledge with those around her. She proudly obtained three Master's degrees, and used what she had learned to educate children all across the country where she worked as a Special Education Administrator, and later as a Religious Education Administrator.
Ellen is remembered for her kind and selfless character. She was an avid traveler who loved nature. She enjoyed spending her time off backpacking around the world, most notably throughout Europe and the United States. Ellen was also an animal lover, having rescued several dogs who accompanied her on her travels as well.
Predeceased by her parents, Neil and Anna, and her brother, Neil Mackie; Ellen is survived by her sister, Trudie Mackie; nephew Neil Mackie and his wife Michelle and their children, Nikole, Breanne, Neil and Olivia; a niece Jennifer Laguerra and her husband EJ and their children Brent and Bentley; as well as many other extended family and friends.
Family and friends may gather on Thursday, September 28th, 2023 from 5-8pm at Sheenan Funeral Home located at 233 Dunellen Avenue, Dunellen. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10am on Friday, September 29th at St. John the Evangelist Church in Dunellen.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Ellen's name to Rawhide Rescue or St. Jude's.
