It’s with a heavy heart and endless gratitude for a life well-lived that we share the passing of Bruce E. Swackhamer, who left us on July 29th, at the age of 75, after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
Bruce, known by some as Swack, more still as Uncle Bruce, was born in Toms River, NJ, starting his life near the beach. His love of the sun and sand carried with him through his life.
Eventually, the family moved to South Plainfield, NJ, where he spent the rest of his childhood, graduating from South Plainfield HS in 1968.
After graduation, he spent two tours in Vietnam eventually being honorably discharged. Once stateside, Bruce joined the workforce, but his best life was at the shore, renting a house in Manasquan with friends old and new. Whether partying at DJais In Belmar or the Osprey in Manasquan, Swack was known. Outside the summer, he embraced his hobby of skiing, traveling throughout the US and Europe for the best runs and better après-ski. Later, he kept local, preferring to spend time with friends and family but was never one to turn down an opportunity to dance. He worked hard as a machine operator, first at Ford and then at various printing and binding industries, priding himself on bringing efficiency and creative problem solving. This talent extended beyond his professional life and if anyone was ever going to fit a square peg into a round hole, it would have been Bruce.
He cared for his friends and family deeply, becoming Uncle Bruce in 1970, after the birth of his first nephew, a title he carried with pride and a role that extended far beyond his relatives.
Bruce was predeceased by his father Dewitt Swackhamer and his mother Helen Skvarch Swackhamer. He is survived by his four “B” sisters and their husbands, Barbara and Clement
Maccia of Bedminster, NJ, Beverly and Stanley Phillips of Forked River, NJ, Bonnie and Leslie Moshinsky of Somerset, NJ, and Bernice and Kevin Keizer of Alexandria Township, NJ. He was
proudly Uncle to his 10 nieces and nephews, Matthew, Michael, Danielle, Stanley, Amanda, Jonathan, Ross, Gabriele, Hileri, and Leander; Grand-Uncle to Carter, Stella, Nicholas,
Matthew, Austin, Leo, Arthur, Helen, Audrey, and Smith. He also leaves behind his life-long friends from Oak Manor Parkway, buddies from Manasquan, and found family of Pizza and
Pasta (Middlesex, NJ).
The family asks for those who knew and cared for Bruce to join them, Monday, August 4, 2025 from 4 PM to 8 PM at Sheenan Funeral Home in Dunellen, NJ to reminisce and have a toast in
his memory.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations given in Bruce’s memory to VA Lyons/ Voluntary Services. (Make checks payable to: VANJHCS, Lyons Campus. Memo Line: 8889 - Palliative
