Alfred R. “Al” Benassu
Al was born in North Plainfield, NJ on September 5, 1924. He was a partner in an accounting firm retiring at age 83. He proudly serviced his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a gunners mate on the USS Bryant. He was one of the original crew members and was in campaigns that provided support to the US Navy fleet including Iwo Jima, Leyte Gulf and Okinawa.
Al was an avid fisherman and enjoyed fishing up in Califon and at Round Valley Reservoir. He enjoyed playing cards at the Green Brook Senior Citizen Center. He was predeceased by his parents; Noe & Amelia, his wife, Josephine of 27 years, his son, Rev. Gregory Benassu, and his brother, Arnold.
Surviving are his daughter Gail and husband Skip, two grandsons; Graham and Jason (Katie); four great grandchildren, Camden, Logan, Madelyn and Ethan; his nephews John, Steve and David and nieces Fran, Joann, MaryLou and Carrie.
Friends and relatives may visit on Monday, November 25th beginning at 10 am at the funeral home. A prayer service will begin at 11 am. Interment with military honors to follow at Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains.
