Steve Czemeris

April 2, 1922 ~ November 26, 2019 (age 97)

Steve Czemeris, 97, of Piscataway, passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2019 at his home.

Born in Newark, he was the son of the late Stephen and Anna nee Nycharovich Czemeris, the brother to Helen Kunda and John Czemeris.

As a young man he was part of the Civilian Conservation Corp. After joining the United States Maritime Service, Steve enlisted in the United States Navy before the attack on Pearl Harbor. He would go on to become a Navy “Frogman”, the forerunner of today’s Navy SEALS. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat. Upon returning home after the war, Steve worked for Buffalo Tanks, a division of Bethlehem Steel, before becoming Animal Control Warden of Piscataway.

Steve was also a Captain of the New Market Fire Company. He was a member of VFW Post 7504 and American Legion Post #261. An avid hunter and fisherman, he loved being outdoors with his friends.

He is survived by his sister Vera Jarema of South Plainfield and her family. He was Uncle Steve to the families of William Czemeris and Darlene Lilly and was a long time friend to many. Steve will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Friends may visit on Wednesday, December 4 from 10:00 – 11:00 AM with a brief service to follow. Burial will take place at the Bound Brook Cemetery.
