Reverend Herbert J Stab, 85 passed away peacefully on Wednesday June 7, 2017 at the Reformed Church Home in Old Bridge, NJ. He was born in Flehingen, Germany, the son of the late Oswald and Lucy (Feckler) Stab.
Father Stab grew up in Sayreville as a member of Our Ladies of Victories Parish and was the first vocation from the parish. He studied for the priesthood at St. Charles College and Seminary in Catonsville, MD and St. Mary Seminary in Baltimore, MD, and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Trenton by Bishop George W. Ahr on May 23, 1959 in St. Mary Cathedral, Trenton, NJ. Father Stab served as parochial vicar at St. Catherine/St. Margaret Parish in Spring Lake; St. Joseph Parish in Toms River; Holy Angels Parish, Trenton; St. John the Evangelist Parish, Dunellen; and St. Luke Parish, North Plainfield. He served as pastor of Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Piscataway from May of 1975 until his retirement in June of 2007, 32 years, his only pastorate. He served as Pastor Emeritus of Our Lady of Fatima from the time of his retirement until his death, spending 57 years as a priest. As a priest of the Diocese of Metuchen, he served as dean of Cathedral Deanery, Director of the Office of the Diaconate, and an adjunct judge of the diocesan tribunal. Father Stab earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Iona College in New Rochelle, NY. He had a love of reading, and was always trying to learn more about the world around him. He spoke German, Italian and Yiddish. Father Stab was dedicated to the parishes he served and to families that made up his ministry. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his brothers; Leon and wife Nancy of Englishtown, NJ; Anton and wife Priscilla of Haysville, NC; and Martin and wife Elaine of Hazlet, NJ. He is also survived by 6 nephews and 10 great nieces and nephews. Father Stab is also survived by his long time care giver, Roberta Mauer.
All arrangements are under the direction of the Sheenan Funeral Home of Dunellen. A visitation will be held on Friday June 9 2017 at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Piscataway from 2:00pm until 7:30pm. A Mass of Commemoration will be celebrated at 7:30pm Friday evening. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at Our Lady of Fatima at 11:00am. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Parlin. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Father Stab’s name to Our Lady of Fatima. Please note that all services will take place at Our Lady of Fatima Church.
