Maria Emilia Carvalho, 72, passed away unexpectedly at her home in Piscataway on Thursday November 9, 2017. Born in Povoa da Rainha, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Evaristo and Angelina (Sequeira) Monteiro.
Mrs. Carvalho taught Spanish for 30 years in the Woodbridge School System. She loved to spend time tending to her vegetable garden, where she was often doing battle with the woodland creatures, to protect what she’d grown. She had a love for reading and spending time in the library, often times picking out books for her family to read. She loved shopping for bargains, and baking cookies. But Maria’s greatest joy came from her family. She loved keeping a happy home for her husband and children, and in later years, she became entirely focused on her grandchildren. It was all about family to her, and caring for her grandchildren was a labor of love. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Maria is survived by her beloved husband of 52 years, Manuel “Sonny” Carvalho. She is also survived by her 2 children; daughter Anne Marie Anderson and husband Ivan of Tewskbury, NJ, and by her son, Paul Carvalho and his fiancé Meredith Nolin of Whitehouse Station, NJ. Mrs. Carvalho is survived by her 4 cherished grandchildren; granddaughter Alena Anderson, grandson Joel Anderson, granddaughter Madeline Carvalho and granddaughter Molly Nolin. She is also survived by her brother Tony Monteiro and wife Nancy of Bridgewater.
A viewing will be held on Monday, November 13, from 2:00-4:00 and from 7:00-9:00 pm at the Sheenan Funeral Home, 233 Dunellen Ave in Dunellen. A mass will be celebrated on Tuesday November 14 at 10:00am at St Francis Cabrini Catholic Church in Piscataway. Entombment will follow at Resurrection Mausoleum in Piscataway.
