Alexander R McCann Obituary

Alexander R. McCann, 89 years old, of Piscataway, New Jersey passed away on Thursday June 7 at St. Peter’s University Hospital, New Brunswick, New Jersey.  He was born on May 2, 1929 in Tennent, New Jersey to William McCann and Ella Jasko. He grew up in Freehold, New Jersey and attended local schools, graduating from Freehold High School. He was predeceased by his parents, his cherished brothers William and Melvin Michael (“Mickey”) and younger sister Shirley Joyce McCann Rowlinson.  His youngest sister Helen McCann Witkowski survives him.  He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 67 years Mary R. and children Mary Bernadette McCann Stone and her husband Gordon, Alexander J. (“A.J.”) and his wife Pamela, Robert J. and his wife Christine and daughter Therese M. McCann.

He was known as “Central Control” of the McCann Clan, a position he relished. Alex loved to hear every detail of the activities of his grandchildren Laura Sammon and her husband Jim, Meredith Stone Tesch and her husband John, Michelle McCann Stone, Alexander and Matthew McCann and Riley Kursay McCann.  His great grandchildren kept him up to date with the latest technology and he will be missed by Skyler, Jimmy, Eddie, Joey, Gabrielle and Tommy Sammon.  His last great grandchild and namesake Alexandra May Tesch brought much happiness to his final three months.

After graduation, he helped his grandfather Alexander Jasko run the family farm before joining the U.S. Navy.  He was assigned to the Fulton-class submarine tender USS Orion and served during the Korean War.  It was with great joy that he heard the recent news of talks to officially end the war. Alex enjoyed his annual trip to the Bahamas with his wife and keeping up with his beloved New York Mets. He enjoyed a distinguished career with Western Electric Co., the manufacturing arm of AT&T.  Early in his career he was transferred to Nashville, TN where the young family was introduced to country music, barbeque and made lifelong friendships.
