Mary Helen (Hoffman) Smith

Mary Smith, nee Hoffman, of North Plainfield, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday; August 19th, 2017 with her loving family by her side.

She was born in Carpinis, Romania on February 2nd, 1923.  When she was six months old her family immigrated to the United States, joining relatives in Cincinnati. She grew up there with her mother, father and younger brother Henry, who was killed in World War II.  After the war Henry’s platoon leader, Lt. Edward C. Smith of Plainfield, visited the family, he and Mary fell in love, and were married.  They returned to New Jersey, settling in North Plainfield, and remained happily married for 51 years until his death in 1997.  In her younger days, Mary worked for many years as a secretary at T.H. Fulton, an appliance store in Plainfield.  She was a devout Roman Catholic, a member of St. Luke’s parish in North Plainfield for the past 50 years, and an active volunteer there, most recently with the Rosary Society.  In her free time, Mary enjoyed crafts, baking, gardening, and, most of all, spending time with her family.

She was predeceased by her husband Ed and her daughter-in-law Betsy, and is survived by her daughter Karen Dugan (Dennis) of Loveladies, son Robert (Elaine) of New Providence, and daughter Donna Abrams (Jeff) of Meyersville, along with 12 Grandchildren and 15 Great-Grandchildren.

There will be a visitation on Monday; August 21st from 6-8PM at the Sheenan Funeral Home, 233 Dunellen Ave., Dunellen.  A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday; August 22nd at 10AM at St. Luke’s Church, North Plainfield.  Burial to follow at Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield.
