Catherine (Mehler) Smith

Catherine Smith, 93, of Dunellen, passed away peacefully on Thursday November 10, 2016 at Norwood Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Plainfield, NJ with her loving family by her side. Born in Plainfield, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Helena (Schriener) Mehler.

Catherine grew up in Dunellen, attending both St. John’s Elementary School and Dunellen High School. She worked for many years as a secretary for Nu-Tex Textiles in Dunellen. Catherine had a love for flea markets, gardening, both flowers and vegetables. She also loved oil painting, and traveling with her husband William, with their favorite places being in Western US. She loved to go dancing and writing short stories and fairy tales. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Catherine’s beloved husband William passed away in 2009. She was also predeceased by her brothers, John and William Mehler and her sisters, Gertrude Larkin and Helen Meyer. Catherine is survived by her loving son William J Smith of Dunellen, her loving daughters, Kathleen Zarro and husband Thomas of North Plainfield, and Patricia Pettit and husband James of Hellertown, PA, as well as by her 5 cherished grandchildren and 4 adored great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held on Thursday November 17, from 6:00-9:00 pm at the Sheenan Funeral Home, 233 Dunellen Ave in Dunellen. A mass will be celebrated on Friday November 18 at 9:00 am at St John’s Catholic Church in Dunellen. Entombment will follow at Resurrection Mausoleum in Piscataway.
